In a society influenced by talent shows, 15 minutes of fame phenomena gone crazy, many children are subjected to a set of unrealistic expectations, affecting their childhood and warping their sense of self worth. The prescriptive nature of media in contemporary society sets up ‘ideal’ images for consumers to aspire to. It can be said that the media dictates norms through representing only specific and restrictive type of beauty, which individuals in society then aspire to attain. The media prescribes and presents to us a lifestyle, which parents and their children, in turn, aspire to achieve. It is felt that attaining these beauty and talent ideals will lead to fulfillment. Competitive parenting, a notion recently identified within academic discourse demonstrates how parents set themselves and their children impossible goals, putting their children through extensive and excessive training and competitions to obtain media exposure.
