Eddy Pearce is a location scout who has been encouraged by photographers and directors he’s worked with over the years to develop his own photography work. One of his pieces, “Volcano Road – Lanzarote” won gold in the single image category in the LPA’s Landscape 2 competition.
“This is the second LPA award I’ve won”, says Eddy, “and it’s great. Winning competitions gives that extra bit of confidence and is a definite boost.”
The image was taken whilst Eddy was working as a location scout in Lanzarote. It was meant as a test shot but ended up being the best image of the series. “I’d noticed this stunning road across the black volcanic rock,” explains Eddy, “under an amazing night sky. I sometimes get a bit jaded by landscapes, but not this time.” The finished shot might look as if it’s had a lot of post-production work done on it, but all Eddy did was adjust the levels and tidy it up a little. The success of the image comes from the juxtaposition of the stark black landscape against the weird night-time light.
As a location scout for both commercial photographers and film/TV companies, Eddy has come to be recognised by photographers and directors for his creative input. As a result, his clients put a lot of trust into their briefs and allow Eddy to scout creatively, having a lot of input himself. With their encouragement, he has started to make a move into photography and has had some recent commissions, but – like many creatives – finds it hard to juggle existing work with making the jump into a new area.
