Chris Bucher

Chris Bucher is an award-winning, Indianapolis-based photographer whose work, assignments and clients are extremely diverse. His winning images are part of a five month project documenting inner city youths.

"In my backyard there is a youth sports ministry gym. The kids use boxing as a safe haven from their neighbourhoods which can, at times, be an even more scary and violent place than the ring. In a 5-month examination of the kids, coaches and mentors at this gym, the spirit and joy of these kids, in the face of the poverty they live in, was an inspiration to me. Tevin Orr’s strength of mind and passion to work took him to the Finals at the Ringside World Championships in August, 2008 in Kansas City, Missouri, USA."

Chris has recently published a book, Lighting Photo Workshop which can be purchased on Amazon.

This practical guide covers everything from controlled studio lighting and flash systems to working outdoors in bright or low light conditions, showing how the right lighting can enhance color, improve contract, and lead to new creative possibilities.

"My goal with Lighting Photo Workshop was to bring real life professional lighting solutions to every day photographers.  Often times the “best” light is when one is getting the kids ready for the work, or when you are eating dinner—all the same, sometimes, you just have to take a photograph in the middle of day.
By starting with the basics of exposure and how light works, I show how you can find or make good looking light any time and any where just by using your head learning to see the how the light and shadow is working in your image.  Lighting Photo Workshop doesn’t delve deeply into studio strobes, but does go over the basics of dealing with small strobes for fill and accent lights.
The subjects were also carefully selected as to show that great photographs don’t always mean deep trekking in to the wilds or waiting for hours for the right light.  Urban landscapes, portraits, groups, weddings, and landscapes that aren’t too far off the beaten path are the examples shown.  My hope is that new photographers will glean much real life information about lighting and that this book will help them get up to speed quickly in learning about photographic lighting."
