Guido Torres wins Silver
Guido Torres: single image, Silver
The striking image which won Guido Torres silver place in the single image category was taken as the photographer was on his way to Real de Catorce, a ghost town in Mexico. “As I was driving, I saw a woman approaching a dog laying on the side of the road,” Guido explains. “I stopped a couple of yards away and realised that the woman had been looking for her dog and had just found it, dead.” The woman crouched by her dog, covered her face and started crying, and Guido had found his winning shot.
An animal-lover himself, Guido grew up with several dogs in his family. He knows only too well the incredible pain of losing a much-loved pet and recognises the fact that viewing another person’s grief can evoke in us the pain and beauty of such a close relationship.
“I like two things in particular about this shot,” he tells us. “Firstly, it’s a real situation that could happen to anyone, and secondly, it’s a really strong image - an image that makes you feel something just by looking at it.”
Photographs, like any art, should make the viewer feel something, he thinks, whether it’s compulsion, happiness or joy. “If you see a photograph hanged in a gallery and you see people passing by as if it wasn´t there, what does this tell you?”
Guido has recently updated his LPA profile and is looking for collaborations with other artists, photographers and agents.
