Rene Roalf Jensen wins Bronze
Rene Roalf Jensen: series category, Bronze
The striking images which were awarded Bronze in the series category of Love, Pain and Beauty are the work of Rene Roalf Jensen. Rene painted the colour images with a mixture of condiments before “baking” them at high temperatures in order to create the unusual effect which caught the judging panel’s attention.
“The original series is some years old,” Rene explains, “but I have always liked them a lot. I think they are strong because they focus on what it is to be human, and they are very expressive. I think they evoke a lot of different feelings - and, of all the feelings, love is the most important.
”The final version which we see here is particularly captivating because of Rene’s unusual technique. He explains how it works: “The original image is a colour image. The colour print is then painted with stuff from the fridge, including olive oil, ketchup and mustard and then baked in the oven for 7-10 minutes. It’s then sealed with varnish before being scanned, digitised and printed.
”Rene’s background is in radiography as well as photography, and he still works as a consultant radiologist, specialising in image-processing in healthcare. He enjoys collaborating with other artists from Denmark and elsewhere and his fine art photography has been widely exhibited. Rene himself organises art and photography exhibitions in his local region.
He is currently gearing up for a photography trip to India later this year, where he plans to shoot some landscape images and hopes to secure backing for an international video project.
