Peter Adams Wins Gold

Peter Adams, who won Gold in the series competition of Let's Face It: 6, is a new LPA member. The series of pictures, of the Dassenech tribe in Ethiopia's Omo Valley, were mainly taken as a personal project. Peter has his wife to thank for the win: she sent him a link to the competition, urging me to enter.

Peter is one of the worlds leading travel photographers and has been working in the business since 1986. He won the Travel Photographer of The Year title in 2003 and was a judge in 2004. In 2006 he was runner up in The Observer's "Seeds of Change" photographic competition.
"I do a lot of people photography in my travel work," Peter tells us, "including portraits, when I come across someone particularly interesting. I’m fascinated by people: it’s often the people that really make a place. For this series, I was on a tour of The Omo Valley with a driver and guide mainly to satisfy my own curiosity. One day, we crossed a river in a dug out canoe to reach a Dassenech Village. The teenage girls immediately came down to greet us. They were some of the most natural, uninhibited girls I’d ever come across. They wore amazing head gear and jewelery made from old bottle tops, discarded bullets and keys. As is usual in these parts, I negotiated a fee to take their pictures before I removed the camera from the bag."

Peter hopes to enter more competitions in the spirit of promotion. "When I won Travel Photographer of The Year, I wasn’t particularly good at self promotion or making the most of the exposure," he admits, "and this is something I hope to remedy with this opportunity! As I mainly work alone, it’s good to get out there into the wider photographic and publishing community."

Peter will be in India shooting the Holi festival until March 2010. He has some European trips and some aerial photography in Iceland planned and would like to do a book and exhibition at some point in the future. He is actively seeking anyone interested in commissioning him to do a travel project or working in partnership on a publishing project.
