EDUCATION

In 1992, having just turned 23, Phil Mucci moved to New York City, with only $800 in his pocket and no job. He had a photography degree from Syracuse University, a year’s experience at a photo studio upstate, and a helluva lot of gumption. He began working as a freelance photo-assistant for a variety of still-life and special effects photographers and, in 1993, became studio manager and first assistant for Eric Meola, a successful advertising photographer in Tribeca. Within 3 years, Phil developed an entirely original portfolio of his own, and in the summer of 1996, he left the studio to stake his claim.

Phil immediately started working for a variety of clients, and quickly gained recognition for his unique style of photography and photo-montage. The Mamiya camera company selected Phil as the first featured artist in their “Today’s Assistants, Tomorrow’s Pros” campaign, and sponsored a show of his work in October of 1996. The following year, Phil was chosen to show his work at Lincoln Center, in connection with the NU Breed Synergy of the Arts, where he was one of a hundred selected artists from around the world, representing the best emerging talents in the arts. These were only the first of many honors culminating in a Gold Medal for Fashion Photography at the London Photographic Awards in 2007.
