Finding this girl standing by a track in a sugar cane field outside her house, little more than a shack was quite revelation. Very pretty but crushingly poor with her siblings clinging to her, one could only guess at her story. Her skin covered with a powder which I could only presume was for measles.

This is my Gran in January last year. We’d travelled up to see her in Yorkshire to finalise getting her into a nursing home near where we lived in London. She rarely left her house so when we did visit we would always take her out somewhere for lunch. On this final occasion we took her to her favourite place, a little fish and chip shop nearby that she’d gone to since she was young. There’s something about the way she’s buttoning up her coat to leave and her genuinely happy expression that I really like. She’s still independent.

Victoria, 11 year old orphan and rape victim in Ghana. She had just received her first councelling session and medical tests thanks to a local charity. The picture epitomizes that moment of clarity and life ahead.

My 11 month old daughter Martha playing the piano. I am a musician recovering from Repetitive Strain Injury and depression, and this image embodies the end of a very difficult road and the beginning of a new creative path for me. My inspiration has been rekindled with the birth of my daughter.
