Lei Min, 13, and sister Gong Ling Ling 2, are from Sichuan.
As the PRC prepares for its 60th year celebrations, away from Beijing and the media spotlights lies a community in need. Faced with the realisation that their homes may be destroyed at anytime, the inhabitants are placed in a difficult situation as terrible living conditions are brushed a side by the government. In an area whose people live to remember the brutal war atrocities of Japanese invaders, residence remain torn over the fate of  an area which houses both fond memories and a painful past.

Second place - Silver

Itīs incredible the pain we feel when we have lost a friend, and how this feeling increases with just the thought of the love we felt for each other and the beauty surrounding it.

Third place - Bronze

Ansett,Richard

From the Series Ron & Roger, this image is an intimate exploration of love between two men. Regardless of the culturally stereotypical objects that surround them and define them in simplistic terms as 'gay', the emotion between them is touching and unmistakable. Being able to love and be loved is hard enough without the fears and predjudice that haunt same sex relationships; this image i hope goes some way to recognising love wherever it is expressed.

observing a friend...in love, hurting, and yet when looked upon from a safe distance, so beautiful.

I took this photograph of a couple enjoying the sun on London’s Kings Road. They symbolise love, through the wedding ring on her finger. They symbolise pain, the tattoos on his chest and the cut on his lip. They symbolise beauty, because through it all, this couple have a beautiful relationship and live a beautiful life, together.

July 2009 - Chiulo - Angola; I think that once you take a photo the subject became part of you. I did that photo wandering what was next for that beautyfull woman. Today, 14/09/09, my friends from the hospital told me Carla is back, get some kilos and in a some days she will be back home. I think I can say I'm truly happy. Photography must bow to the beauty of truth.

Bleak. This is a foster child who had recently been taken into a loving home. Her eyes tell a story, suggestions of her past..? Her situation is less than ideal- but she is no less a vision to behold.
